Do You Listen to Your Body?

What is our body saying when we repeatedly ignore its signals that something is out of balance?  Most often it is “LISTEN to me”.  Some pain calls for immediate response:  Burning heat – pull our hand away from the fire. flax Weakness and headache – get something to eat.  Acute chest pains – call 911.  Other pain is simply asking us to rest, stay still and protect ourselves from further injury.  Childbirth pain instinctively focuses us on fully participating in the demanding process of labor.

We can disassociate from our body’s messages through “living from the neck up”, substance abuse, being too busy, and self-medication.  Eventually the body in its wisdom, will crank up the pain level and get our attention.  When our response to pain is fear and resistance, we go into combat mode and the pain is the enemy causing us to lose clarity and increase stress.  Unprocessed pain keeps our system of self-preservation on constant alert.  We may have sudden intrusive memories, and many nonthreatening situations can activate alarmingly high sensations of fear and pain in our body.

Our partner might raise her voice in irritation and the full force of our past wounds – all the terror, rage or hurt that lives in our body from past experiences – is unleashed.  Often this leads to disastrous results and we feel unsafe and just want to get away from the pain and the person.  We lash out in aggression, freeze in depression, may have suicidal thoughts, or drink ourselves senseless.  Yet, through all this, the pain and fear don’t go away.
