Tim didn’t know why he responded so quickly with anger, judgment, and projection, but he was seeing the result of this behavior in his relationship with his wife and it scared him. His wife was close to walking out the door – forever.
When he called he said he just didn’t know where the anger was coming from. I mentioned that anger is often a cover-up for fear (paranoia is the extreme) or sadness (depression is the extreme). The voice on the other end went silent and then, softly muffled sobs.
In an instant, he had become a little boy of three and felt those feelings of neglect and being ignored as if they were happening right in this moment.
We did some gentle tapping on the temples to break the pattern and a technique of looking straight across as far as he could to the left and then as far as he could to the right simultaneously saying “release”. I explained that this would slow down the emotion so the body could feel safe.
Let me share with you why it’s important to release and reframe this pain without medication for a more sustainable solution. If Tim continues to respond with anger, his wife will respond in kind with feelings of unsafe and feeling threatened. Her natural response then would be to want to leave in order to feel safe. Plus Tim was so upset after each confrontation simply because he knew he had made things worse rather than resolving anything; this was leading to a sad ending. His self-esteem was at an all-time low and his toolbox felt empty.
I suggested to Tim that his plate was full of anger from childhood and we needed to clear some of it for the body so he wasn’t in constant overwhelm. He mentioned that he tried smoking pot, yet the anger found a way to come up even through the self-medication and his wife objected to him being stoned because she felt so disconnected from him. He agreed to come in for a session so our work could begin.
