Consistently holding on to old stories, events and feelings can make us isolate and disconnect from others. Having two feet in the past – or even just one – deprives us of being fully present and enjoying the now moment.
We have all met someone who is constantly talking about the good old days and how much better, or worse, it was than the present moment. This is a behavior that smacks of someone who is stuck and reliving the same tape over and over. Lamenting about what was; keeps us from what is. If we cannot be in the present moment, we quickly become part of the problem rather than the solution. When our energy is stuck in the past, we have less energy to bring to the issues and people we connect with in the present moment. How do we release and let go?
It is important to recognize and own the behavior of stuck and have the desire to get unstuck. We know we are stuck when we repeatedly have the same story coming out of our dialogue in some form or another, or when we have illness/pain showing up in the same part of the body, or similar feelings popping up over and over with no resolution. How do we let go?
First, find a technique that we can teach the body to assist it in its release and reframe process. I call these “self-care tools” (yoga, meditation, and body maintenance work well) and for most processing, they work beautifully once the body trusts you to use them when needed. Remember, it doesn’t do much good to have a flashlight at home when you are stuck on the road with car trouble. Our bodies are constantly telling us what is UP for us. Pain in the chest? Sadness. Pain in the thighs? Rage. Pain in the low back? Self-hate or guilt. Pain between the shoulder blades? Stored anger or anger not processed. These nudges from the body are an effort to get us to pay attention, and the body will escalate the volume if we ignore it. Don’t ignore the emotional component of each and every event in our lives or it will persist until we resolve.
Once you are paying attention, you can use self-care tools to reframe and release the stored energy – unless you have ignored it to the point of overwhelm. When overwhelm hits and depression, anger, grief, sadness, or rage is present – it may be time to find a process that can assist the body with waking up its natural processing with REM sleep eye movement and breathing.
